Not long ago, I was leading a full-day workshop for a corporate team. The energy in the room was electric.
People were engaged, leaning forward, sharing stories, and even debating passionately during group activities. At the end, one participant came up to me with a huge smile and said:
“I wish we had more sessions like this. I feel so motivated right now!”
Moments like that are why I love what I do. Seeing people light up, connect with each other, and recognise new possibilities—it’s powerful.
But then, three weeks later, I got a quiet message from their manager.
“They really enjoyed the training. But honestly, I’m not seeing much change in their day-to-day behaviour.”
That’s when it struck me: the biggest challenge isn’t delivering the training—it’s making sure it sticks once people walk out of the room.
And this isn’t an isolated story. It happens everywhere. People leave a session inspired, but once they return to overflowing inboxes, deadlines, and daily stress, those aha-moments quickly fade. Research calls this the forgetting curve—and it shows that up to 70% of new information can be lost within a week if it isn’t reinforced.
Now, soft skills make this even trickier. Unlike technical skills, you can’t just “download” communication, empathy, or leadership into someone’s brain. They need practice. Reflection. Feedback. Real-life situations to test and apply what they’ve learnt. Without that, training becomes a one-off event instead of a long-term transformation.
So, how do we bridge the gap between the training room and reality? Here’s what I’ve seen make a difference:
- Repetition and Spacing: Shorter sessions spread over weeks have a stronger impact than a one-time intensive. It’s like fitness—you don’t build strength from one workout.
- Practical Application: Giving participants real-life challenges or micro-tasks to try at work right away helps cement the learning.
- Follow-Ups: Whether it’s a short refresher session, a quick online check-in, or peer accountability, revisiting the lessons keeps them alive.
- Leadership Support: When managers actively reinforce and model the skills, employees feel encouraged to practise them too.
The truth is, training is just the beginning. The real transformation happens afterwards—when people keep practising, reflecting, and embedding those skills into their daily lives.
So the next time someone invests in a workshop, I always ask:
👉 Do you want a memorable event or lasting change?
